Chocolate Trifle
8-10 Servings
Prep: 30 min. + chilling
Ingredients
1 package chocolate fudge cake mix (regular size)
1 package (6 ounces) instant chocolate pudding mix
1/2 cup strong coffee *(optional)
1 carton (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
6 Heath or other chocolate or toffee candy bars (1.4 ounces each), crushed
Directions
Bake cake according to package directions. Cool. Prepare pudding according to package directions; set aside.
Crumble cake; reserve 1/2 cup. Place half of the remaining cake
crumbs in the bottom of a 4-1/2- or 5-qt. trifle dish or decorative
glass bowl.
Layer with half of the coffee, half of the pudding, half of the
whipped topping and half of the crushed candy bars. Repeat the
layers of cake, coffee, pudding and whipped topping.
Combine remaining crushed candy bars with reserved cake crumbs;
sprinkle over top. Refrigerate 4-5 hours before serving.
Yield: 8-10 servings.
Tips/Variations: Substitute raspberry hot chocolate for coffee, substitute Hershey bars or choc. chips, etc.
and use sugar free ingredients for diabetic diets. Real homemade whipped cream with cream cheese
added (low fat for heart diets).
Add layers of either cherry or raspberry pie filling or use as topping just before whipped cream and the sprinkles are added. Use cooked rather than instant pudding and add 1/3 of the amount
of recommended milk as either canned milk or half and half for richer taste as well as adding 1/4 cup Hershey’s Special
Dark cocoa baking powder to pudding when cooking it.
Toss a few fresh raspberries or a dollop of cherry pie filling on
top center of whipped topping and sprinkles and stick three chocolate coated vanilla stir cookie sticks in it or some
chocolate bars or curls, mint leaves, etc. sticking up out of it for decoration.
Ready Whip whipped cream instead of frozen cool whips. 1 or 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract in pudding mix as well as whipped cream.
If don’t have Trifle dish use glass bowl and adjust thickness and numbers of layers to preference. Any unused ingredients can be used for other things or put in smaller dish for a personal individual serving or two of trifle later or put on ice cream. Oreo cookies
